The University of Guilan began its educational operations as the Graduate School of Businessin1974.
It became the 17th university in Iran after it obtained its approval from the Higher Education Council in 1976.Through a collaborative agreement between Iran and Germany, the university began its activities by accepting 155 students in 9 fields. With 9 faculties, 1 international campus, and 2 research centers, it is the largest academic institution in Northern Iran. At present, it has 534 academic staff members which is composed of 75Instructors, 313 Assistant Professors, 107 Associate Professors, and 39 Full Professors. Every academic year, it admits more than 7,000 students in Bachelor, Master and Ph.D levels, in day and evening sessions. It has 9,981 students in Bachelor's level, 5,112 in Master's level and 939 in Ph.D level. Currently, it has scientific relations with the members of the Association of State Universities of the Caspian Sea Region, Caucasian Region and a number of universities of the European Union, and they share exchange students and academic staff.
